Camp NaNo Log - 7/9-7/12

9:24 PM

Hello all,

If you're wondering if I've been slacking these past few days, the answer is.....

No. I haven't. I have kept up with my hours goal nicely. In fact, with today's work...I'm officially halfway through my goal three days ahead of schedule!!!!

It's just that....there hasn't been much to write home about.

In the past 2 days (7/9-7/11), I started two mock covers (one for "Rose of Culmore" and Ancora Spei) and worked on character sheets for Ancora Spei. All of which were still incomplete at the end of the day. The only other thing that I've done is update some Word backups.

How pathetically boring.

HOWEVER.

Since today is one of my regular half-days, I had a little more time to work on something.

And behold, I finished what I started yesterday! (Still have to finish the rest of the stuff I started for Ancora Spei though.....)

So, let us proceed with the report!

WIP of the Day:

Rose of Culmore

What I did:

Blurb Revision and Mock Cover Change!!!

One goal that I have for Camp, if I don't ever get anything else done, is to have decent blurbs and covers for both my Shaxpir program and my blog! And it's now Rose's turn :).

Old Blurb:

John Callahan has lost his crops and his family to the Irish Potato Famine. Desperate to escape the pain, he moves north with a friend to find work in Derry, Ireland. He ends up in Culmore, where he meets a bonny lass by the name of Rose O'Neill. But...Rose is bound for America and wants nothing to do with John. Can he change her mind?

Brother. What a terrible introduction. Makes you want to run the other direction, don't it?

Let's try changing a few sentences.....

New Blurb:

It is 1844 in County Leitram Ireland and John Callahan has lost his crops to the cursed blight for two years too long. Desperate to escape the pain of losing the family farm and half of his family, he moves north to Derry with his friends, the McAndrews brothers, to find work.

He finds the solace he craves in an unlikely place - a small port town called Culmore.

During one of the village dances, he becomes fascinated with a black-haired lass named Rose O'Neill. But...Rose is bound for America and wants nothing to do with John. Can he change her mind?

There, I like that better!

And now, for the fun bit!

First, we show the horrid, tired old cover.....

Now that you've seen that, we now ask you to banish it from your mind .....

FEAST YOUR EYES!!!

I have noticed, with a lot of surprise, that my mock covers are now looking very professional. The really cool thing is that all of the covers I've made...are with free images and a free program called GIMP 2. No professional photos or anything!

I mean....look at these covers side by side.  The one on the left was one of the first covers I made in GIMP, and the one on the right is one that I've finished today in the same program. The difference of only six months is astounding.

I wonder.....

Should I go into the book cover creation business???

I mean, other bloggers do editing. Why not a blogger that does book covers?

What do you girls think???

Scribblingly yours,

Catherine
