AND

OH MY STARS

IS

 IT

 GOOD!!!!

I'll try to stay coherent...I promise!!

I'll break up my review into three parts: plot, soundtrack and cast.

THE PLOT

Oh my gosh...that beginning. The way that it started so epic and then it faded to a draper's son...just wow.

Charity and P.T's romance....oh my gosh, it is the cutest thing in the world. It starts with a laugh, continues through song and letter..even through tough times. Sure, there were some really rough patches, but...they prevailed without too much damage. And their daughters!!!!!!

The museum...which turned into the circus...just wow. All the performances were epic.

The brash wit that was employed in this film could have easily been cringey, but it slid through.

I wanna know just how much whiskey Barnum and Carlyle drank during "The Other Side"...

SPEAKING OF WHICH......Carlyle's romance with Anne....*HEARTS EYES* It was done so darn well....

It was well written - perfect conflict points (Jenny Lind, protestors, money trouble, fire, social conventions, greed).

The themes were good ones for this day and age (materialism vs. people, finding purpose, etc.)

I rate the plot: 🌟🌟🌟🌟✩ (4 1/2)

THE SOUNDTRACK

OH MY GOLLY GOODNESS....

ALL THE SONGS....

JUST ALL OF THEM.....

ARE SO BEAUTIFUL...

AND STIRRING...

AND JUST

AHHHHHHHHHHH

(go check it out on Spotify. Just go. You'll thank me later)

A lot of the songs are positive and have a strong beat, which I ADORE. The soundtrack went straight on my Spotify as soon as I got home.

So, I rate the soundtrack: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

THE CAST

Hugh Jackman's P.T. Barnum is a good one (I don't think they fully scratched the surface to bring the real P.T. Barnum to life again, but....Jackman did a good impression of him).

Zach Efron played a wonderful Phillip Carlyle young man who wasn't going anywhere at first but when given a purpose, he thrived. And found love besides. (And I must admit, I like the name Carlyle than the original Bailey. Just saying)

Zendaya played a beautiful trapeze artist who finds barriers to her happiness because of her race. Her reluctance was well-played and how she stayed at Carlyle's side....

Michelle Williams played a great Charity Hallet Barnum, the faithful wife who stuck to her husband when in the slums and prosperity.

Rebecca Ferguson who played Jenny Lind, honestly reminded me somewhat of Cate Blanchett in some ways.

My favorite of all the circus players was The Bearded Lady, played by Keala Settle.

Another character that was a favorite, was P.T.'s foil, Bennet from the Herald. It was fun to see these two interact.

I rate the cast: 🌟🌟🌟🌟✰ (4 1/2 stars)

OVERALL

Content stuff from the movie: immodest costumes and some immodest dancing, fire scene (may be scary to some), mild kissing.

I rate this movie: 🌟🌟🌟🌟⭐ (4 3/4 stars)

Needless to say...I now have this movie on my "To Buy on DVD" list.....

And so ends my semi-coherent/semi fanatic review of The Greatest Showman. Has anyone else seen this movie?? What do you think of it??

Scribblingly yours,

Catherine

  4. Eh, I haven't been someone who feels the need to watch it. I just kind of don't like the whole race thing they bring up when that's the last thing we need right now. And Zendaya is one to bring up race a lot. It kind of doesn't help. But, I'm glad you liked it. Its rare to find good movies these days. :)

    2. I do understand that. I guess I'm just tired of hearing about race in general. But I know times were different and it would be historically inaccurate to show it any other way. To her benefit, I heard Zendaya did do most of her own stunts, which I think is pretty cool. :)

  6. Hmmm. I will have to look into this. Honestly I expected never to do anything but ignore it, its expected result being another half-bit sensual attempt at a comic movie. But! My only experience with circus movies has been to love them, so that's one point already, along with your good opinion, Catherine. I think you may have sold me on at least trying it. :)

I've been holding off on listening to the soundtrack until I see, but the snippets I've heard on Spotify have me wanting more...
